SmartPosti, which last week announced its brand change, has opened its largest sorting centre in the Baltics in Rae municipality. Valued at around 14 million euros, it represents a significant foreign investment in Estonia, confirming the country’s growing role as the region’s logistics hub. The complex was constructed by NOBE.
Gediminas Mickus, the head of SmartPosti in the Baltic States, describes the sorting centre as a landmark not only for the company, but for Estonia and the Baltics as a whole. “It is notable for the large amount of foreign investment it has brought into Estonia, boosting the region’s logistical capacity and creating the preconditions for the further development of e-commerce,” he said. “Investing in the country demonstrates the Posti Group’s confidence in the local market and business environment.”
The sorting centre, which has a total area of approx. 7500 square metres, forms part of the Finnish Posti Group. Its sorting line has more than doubled in capacity compared to the previous one. The terminal will be able to be extended in the future by a further 2400 square metres.
“The rapid growth in parcel volumes meant we needed a new and much more effective solution,” Mickus explained. “Opening this new centre will allow us to maintain our market-leading position and to provide a high-quality service even during the busiest shopping periods. It is also worth noting that the centre’s ‘smart building’ concept and its significant charging capacity for electric vehicles provide a strong basis for sustainable development.”
The complex is equipped with sensor systems that will allow a number of processes (such as energy efficiency) to be controlled remotely. The centre is planned to have charging capacity for 82 electric cars by 2030, to be implemented in phases.
Priit Nigols, the Director of Construction and a board member of NOBE, says his company was delighted to be able to play a part in establishing the largest SmartPosti sorting centre in the Baltics. “The complex is modern, sustainable and an excellent example of innovative solutions,” he remarked. “All of that will support SmartPosti’s future growth and development."
